‘Imagining Axom’ at Vivanta By Taj here on January 6  

GUWAHATI, Jan 4: The Delhi Alumni Association of Assam (DAAA), a not-for profit organisation set up by former Assam students of Delhi-based colleges, universities and other educational institutions, is organising its first convention, ‘Imagining Axom’ at Vivanta By Taj here on January 6.

  • Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi will inaugurate the cultural and reunion programme at 6 pm and address a gathering of DAAA members comprising academics, civil servants, lawyers, policy makers, bankers, journalists, civil society activists and entrepreneurs. 
  • The highlights of the event would include an audiovisual presentation in memory of Jnanpith Award winning writer Dr Indira Goswami (Mamoni Raisom Goswami), who, during her tenure at the University of Delhi, had volunteered to be the guardian of every student from Assam.
  • The plenary session, to be held from 3 pm to 5 pm, will include two technical sessions on ‘Imagining Axom’ and ‘Red River’. 
  • The speakers in the sessions will include distinguished alumni like authors Arup Kumar Dutta and Kula Saikia, lawyer Krishna Sarma, OIL Director Rupshikha Borah, writer Mayur Bora, Chandan Mahanta (Dean, IITG), consultant Mukul Gogoi and entrepreneur Dipannita Jaiswal .


10-day Silchar Book Fair begins  

SILCHAR, Jan 4: The 26th edition of Silchar Book Fair got underway at the Bipin Pal meeting
ground on Wednesday.

  • Former Union Minister Kabindra Purakayastha and veteran journalist Atin Das jointly inaugurated the fair.
  • Congratulating the organisers, Kabindra Purakyastha said, “This book fair bears a rich history and the organisers deserve rich appreciation for keeping the interest alive among the ‘bookaholics’ of the valley.” The 10- day fair will conclude on January 14  .

Tezpur University professor gets prestigious award ‘Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry’ FRSC

 GUWAHATI, Jan 4: Dr Ramesh Ch Deka, Professor of Department of Chemical Sciences and the Dean of School of Sciences, Tezpur University, has been awarded the prestigious ‘Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry’ FRSC for his contribution in the field of Chemistry, stated press release. Before joining Tezpur University in 2001, Prof Deka did his PhD in CSIR-NCL Pune, and was awarded ‘Intelligent Modelling Laboratory’ fellowship to work in Tokyo University, Japan, as a post-doctoral researcher. In 2003, he was selected for the ‘Alexander von Humboldt’ fellowship to carry out advanced research at Technical University of Munich, Germany.

Agri-horticultural show begins in Dibrugarh  

DIBRUGARH, Jan 4: The stage is set for the four-day 5th Assam International AgriHorticultural show at the Chowkidinghee ground here from tomorrow with both domestic and international participation.

The event-packed international show will host several horticultural and agricultural exhibitions, seminars, farmers’ assembly, networking meetings, flower parade, training programmes and competitions. Theme-based pavilions and stalls have already been set up for floriculture, apiculture, citrus fruits and medicinal plants, display of agricultural farm equipment, floral parade, farmers’ training, nurseries, food processing units, machineries and equipment, and buyer-seller meets between government/ private sellers and national and international buyers. A special greenhouse equipped with modern technology has also been constructed at the venue . 



Assam secured the third position in the 37th National Junior Kyorugi and 10th National Junior Poomsae Taekwondo Championship


GUWAHATI, Jan 4: Assam secured the third position in the 37th National Junior Kyorugi and 10th National Junior Poomsae Taekwondo Championship held at Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh from December 27 to 31.
Luna Borah won gold in the girl’s U-46 kg category while in the boys category Nirman Rupam Kashyap (U-51 kg) and Ayushman Dutta (U-68 kg) clinched silver medals. Dipika Hazarika (U-42kg), Manumati Dahutia (U- 49kg), Payal Das (U-55kg) and Hema Deori (Above 68 kg) won bronze medals in the girls section. Erin Nobis got a bronze medal in girls individual Poomsae competition. Meanwhile, the G18- Guwahati Open Taekwondo Championship got underway at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium on January 2 and will conclude on January 5, stated a release  .
