Assam Current Affairs 19th January 2018Awards in different fields announced

The Assam Sports and Cultural Festival Samiti has announced the names of the persons chosen for its annual awards in different fields.

The winners for the year 2017 for lifetime achievement awards include.
  1. Pradip Baruah (journalism), 
  2. Dr Dinesh Baishya (education), 
  3. Dr Bhupendra Prasad Sarma (medical), 
  4. Dipen Baruah (culture) 
  5. Birendra Prasad Baishya (sports). 
The best of the year include 
  1. Anuradha Sarma Pujari (journalist), 
  2. Rituraj Bhagawati (sports organiser), 
  3. Riyan Parag Das (sportsperson), 
  4. Assam Jatiya Bidyalay (educational institution) 
  5. Kamrup Natya Samiti (drama group).

The special jury awards will go to 
  1. Brajendra Nath Deka (Publisher), 
  2. Pema Darjee (sportsperson) , 
  3. Bhaben Roy (drama activist) , 
  4. Raj Ahmed (sculptor)
  5. Parthajyoti Bargohain (singer-composer )
Awahan Theatre has been chosen as the best drama group among mobile theatres
  1. Ranjit Das (best playwright), 
  2. Mridul Bhuyan (best actor )
  3. Prastuti Parasar (best actress)
The awards will be formally presented to the winners at a function at Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir at 5 pm on January 29. The occasion will mark the 103rd birth anniversary of Louhapurush Premada Kanta Sarma.

Faiznur Ali passes away on Jan 18, 2018

Faiznur Ali, noted businessman and a serving director of the Assam Industrial Development Corporation Limited, passed away at a private nursing home here due to old-age ailments in the wee hours in JORHAT, Jan 18. He was 82.
  • He leaves behind his wife, two sons and a daughter.
  • Ali, who started his entrepreneurial career by opening a firm called Vibgyor Paints Industries in 1971, was associated with several trade and cultural organisations. He was also the founder secretary of the North Eastern Small Scale Industries Association and a recipient of several awards for his contributions towards the development of the small scale sector.
  • Also a writer and publisher, Ali had established the famous bookstall, Sarali Puthighar (later renamed Shankar Puthighar), here in 1965.
  • Ali, who was a lifetime member of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, had published the writings of noted writers like Padma Bhusan awardee Syed Abdul Malik, Prof Tralukya Goswami and others. 
  • His own writings like Jiba Jagator Sadhu had fetched the best writer’s award for children’s literature from the Asam Sahitya Sabha in 1971.
