Assam Current Affairs 15th January 2018Pioneer of children’s chess Lakhimi Borooah passes away on January 13, 2018

Lakhimi Borooah passed away on January 13 at her Kharghuli residence here.She started the first children’s chess competition in Assam in 1988 under the PC Borooah Educational & Charitable Society. Later, the PC Borooah Chess Academy was set up by her and completed 25 years in 2013.

  • Her academy has produced many State and national-level chess players.
  • She was associated with many social organisations such as the Indian Women and Child Welfare, Eastern India Recreation Club, Assam Sishu Kalyan Sadan, New Art Players among others. 
  • She was the first Assamese lady to represent India in Tea Board in the World Trade Fair in 1964 in New York, USA.
Born on January 3, 1936 into the distinguished family of Late Chitrasen and Late Kamini Kusum Kakoty, she was the wife of Late Jayanta Kumar Borooah and the elder daughter-in-law of Late PC Borooah, the first singer from Assam to record Assamese songs on the gramophone record and actor in the first Assamese movie Joymoti.
She leaves behind two daughters, son-in-laws with grandchildren and a host of relatives.

HOJAI, Jan 15: Assam Hockey annexed the Hockey India 8th National Sub-junior Championship (Men) ‘B’ Division title by outplaying Rajasthan Hockey 3-2 in the final at the Hojai Stadium .

Grand regional poetry festival on Jan 20-21, 2018

With an objective to provide a platform to budding poets of the Northeast, the Guwahati Grand Poetry Festival 2018 –the first Northeast level poetry festival – is being organised in the city on
January 20 and 21.
  • The festival has been collaborated by the English Department of the Cotton University and poetry groups East India Poets and Poetry Couture, and is supported by All India Radio (AIR) and online news portal Time8.
  • To be held at multiple venues in the city, the festival will see an amalgamation of literary luminaries from Assam and other states.
  • The inaugural ceremony of the festival, dedicated to the memory of poet the late Navakanta Barua, will be inaugurated by Dr Rakhee Kalita Moral, former Professor of English, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). She will also deliver the keynote address.


Giasuddin Ahmed passes away 

DHUBRI, Jan 15 - Former Deputy Speaker of State Assembly Giasuddin Ahmed passed away in his residence on Monday due to cardiac arrest. He was 88.
  • The veteran CPI leader was the MLA of Bilasipara West constituency for four times and was appointed as the Deputy Speaker of Assam Assembly from November 13, 1979 to March 19, 1982. 
  • He was born on August 19, 1929 at Borkanda area of Bilasipara.
Ahmed, who was also a lawyer, leaves behind his wife, a son and three daughters.
